Exciting cup match against local rivals Swaffham Town, penalties decide the tie

It was always going to be a tough game for Fakenham Town and so it was. Swaffham Town are going great guns in the various cup competitions, still in the FA Vase, the Norfolk Senior Cup and the First Division Knock-Out Cup whereas Fakenham hardly left an imprint in any of those competitions. They, like us, are on a great unbeaten run including a magnificient 4-3 victory over runaway league leaders Harleston Town, with their last loss being against Fakenham Town a month ago by 2-1. Fakenham are also on a run, 7 games unbeaten, including coming back from a 3-1 deficit against Kings Lynn Reserves to come out 5-3 winners. All day rain had left the pitch a bit slippery but still in great condition and Swaffham made a perfect start by taking the lead after 6 minutes. A nice passing move down the left saw the Swaffham captain Alex Vincent swing a high cross in from the touchline, Fakenham keeper Coombe perhaps misjudged his positioning and saw the ball go over his head into the net at the far post. Not a goal attempt from Vincent but they all count. So for the next 20 minutes it was Fakenham playing catch-up with Brain, in particular, orchestrating some good moves but coming in for some harsh treatment from the Swaffham defenders. 25 minutes saw the first Swaffham booking (No 6 Luke Reed) for (another) foul on Brain. Fakenham attempts to play the ball around at the back proved costly when, after 33 minutes, a poor cross field ball was intercepted by Vincent 30 metres out, well actually it went straight to him without him having to move, and he had time to drive into the box for a good finish, Fakenham's Tuddenham lucky not to see a card as he stuck out a leg to bring down Vincent but fortunately missed. The fightback started after 38 minutes when Fakenham's No 7 Tom Blake was on the end of a superb passing movement between 3 Fakenham players who worked the ball into the Swaffham penalty area and Blake had a simple effort from hardly any distance at all. Half time saw a change when Tuddenham was replaced by Alex Walpole who slotted into the defence, relishing the chance to play again after just completing a 3 match ban. Fakenham certainly upped the tempo right from the start of the half and began to dominate in midfield where Brain, Hogston and Franks started to win lots of ball and get the team moving forward with Tom Blake and Ryan Curtis out wide making the Swaffham defenders work very hard to contain them with Alby Matthews winning lots of ball in the air to start the attacks. Swaffham started to creak a little and again a card was show after 55 minutes, this time to No 7 Nick Castellan, for bundling over Brain. Shortly afterwards Callum had the last laugh when he received the ball wide right, wriggled his way past a defender and down the goal-line, put in a hard, low cross and saw Keeper Tommy Rix fumble the greasy ball into his own goal. Fakenham should have taken the lead through Blake but, a one-on-one with Rix in the Swaffham goal was won by Rix who got down quickly to clear with his legs. Another similar chance fell to Blake but again Rix was equal to the challenge. With time fast running out, both teams threw players forward looking for the winner, with Andrew Skipper and Lewis Sturman both receiving a Yellow Card for some resolute (make that illegal) defending but it wasn't to be for either team and the final whistle went with a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner (no Extra Time allowed for in the competition) coming into play. It was a high quality shoot-out which was all level after the first 5 penalties from each team, and the sudden death kicks going to 7 all before Andrew Skipper sealed the win by 8-7. Good match for the spectators, the Fakenham run continues, into the Quarter Finals so await the draw later on but back to the league on Friday with a home game against Mulbarton Wanderes. #COYG
