Season up and running after a superb 3-1 win over a strong Norwich CBS side

The future is bright, the future is Amber&Black

Shrugging off the opening day loss to Ipswich Wanderers, the team travelled to the Norwich FA Football Development Centre to play a strong Norwich CBS side who had swept aside Cornard United by 3-1 on their opening day fixture. The so-called 'Field of Dream', resembling more a beach with a few tufts of grass dotted about, proved anything but as a young Fakenham Town side gave the CBS defence a torrid time with the pace of the front three opening them up time after time. It was almost the perfect start for Fakenham when, after 2 minutes, a CBS defensive mistake gifted Reece Taylor the ball on the left, he made ground and put in a great cross which found Harry Exley clear but a bobble as Harry shot caused the ball to rise and skim the crossbar as it rose. CBS started slowly but soon put their experience to good use as they confidently played the ball along their back line and into midfield, leaving our front players mainly chasing shadows as they tried to close down the CBS players. Their main attacking weapon in the first quarter was the long throw which their No 5 Dan Barraclough used to put the ball deep into the Fakenham area but the defenders were able to clear the ball away every time, not comfortably, but they got it away. CBS almost took the lead after 16 minutes when a 'strong' backpass by Dan Tuddenham to keeper Dan Lloyd, saw Lloyd unable to control the ball and it bounced away to the CBS No 9 Stephen Drake who rounded Lloyd but at an acute angle and his shot hit the side netting. Fakenham took the lead after 21 minutes when the CBS keeper conceded a corner in blocking a Harry Exley shot with his legs after the defence had been harried into a mistake by Luke Priestley. The corner was delivered low and hard accross the goal and midfielder Callum Brain was the first to react to put the ball into the net, his second goal of the season. The rest of the half was even between the teams, CBS always a threat as they moved the ball first one way then the other but moves continually breaking down on the edge of the Fakenham area as defenders blocked, harried or headed clear. Fakenham saw a couple of really good chances go begging, Luke Priestley intercepted a really poor defensive pass accross field but a defender just got back to make the tackle as Luke was about to shoot . All throughout the game Priestley and Exley harried the defence into a fair few mistakes, not what you would have expected from such experienced players. Right on the stroke of half time, Callum Brain saw a shot from 10 metres out cleared by the keeper off his legs but Callum hit the rebound over the bar. So 1-0 to Fakenham at half time and you couldn't say it wasn't deserved. CBS made two substitutions at the interval, King & Henery making way for Tuttle & Gauntlett, a sign that they recognised they were being outgunned by Fakenham all over the park. The swap almost paid off immediately when Lloyd made a great save from a strong header at a corner. Fakenham responded with a second goal after 51 minutes from Reece Taylor when a superb long ball by Priestley from right to left cut out the CBS defence and Taylor came infield and, from an acute angle, put the ball well out of reach of the keeper from 12 metres out. 2-0 became 3-0 after 61 minutes when Taylor got his second of the game when a long ball over the CBS defence saw Exley clear on the right and his pass on the edge of the box accross the goal saw Taylor free in front of an empty goal. CBS got a goal back after 75 minutes when a corner saw No 8 Shawn Wones completely free in front of goal and his header beat keeper Lloyd although he did get his hands to it. The remaining 15 minutes saw the CBS defence continually struggling as the ball over them had Tayor, Priestley and Exley licking their lips at the space and time they had, it should have resulted in a couple more goals but the keeper did well to keep the ball out of the net. The last kick? of the game almost saw a Tuddenham OG as a clearance sailed just over his own goal, an event that had Dad Glen holding his head in his hands. A 3-1 win against a team that finished in the top third of last years table was a great achievement and well deserved. A real confidence booster ahead of the FACup game this Friday away at Premier Division side Thetford Town. #COYG
