A 3-3 draw against Swaffham Town the very least the team deserved

Where did all the extra time come from?

If this had been a 90 minute game Fakenham would have run out comfortable winners but when you play 104 minutes then anything can happen. Manager Andy Cunningham made a few changes to the starting line-up with Alby Matthews promoted from the bench along with Ryan Curtis who made an impression in the Reserves 4-0 drubbing of Anglian Combination Premier Division side St Andrews in the Mummery Cup. Goal keeper Henry Debenham retained his place at the expense of Dan Lloyd and Lawrie Blythe, Dan Hogston and Luke Priestley sat this one out on the bench. A frantic start by both teams with both showing an attacking desire and it was Swaffham who struck first after 7 minutes through their No 6 Ryan Pearson. A Swaffham corner from the right was delivered deep to the back post, not cleared by the defence, came back into the centre of the goal area and, from 10 metres out, there was Pearson on hand to swivel, get a clean contact on the ball and leave Debenham helpless to prevent the ball going into the net. Fakenham equalised after 13 minutes through a superb Callum Brain free-kick from 25 metres out which got up and down over the wall and left Rix in the Swaffham goal only able to watch as it rocketed past his left and into the top corner of the net. This signalled a good period of Fakenham pressure on the Swaffham goal with Matthews, Curtis and Edgely giving the defenders a hard time but at the other end Plumb, Pearson and Nick Castellan equally giving the Fakenham defenders the same. Plumb justified his position of pool favourite to be the first in the referee's book (narrowly beating Matty Franks) for a protacted period of giving the referee a hard time on every decision given (or not given) involving Swaffham. He almost made amends by forcing Debenham into a great save, just getting a hand to a goal bound shot at the left post. Just as the half was winding down Fakenham took the lead when full back Shane Akers made a storming run down the right wing, leaving a couple of Swaffham defenders in his wake and he put in a wonderful cross into the area and there was Alby Matthews, in front of goal, with a well time header to beat Rix. A Swaffham equaliser came at the 45+3 minute mark when a free-kick some 35 metres out somehow found an unmarked Pearson whose sublime volley thundered into the goal. Half-time at 45+5 saw it level at 2 goals apiece. In the second half, Fakenham for the second time took the lead after 52 minutes with a really good goal by Ryan Curtis on the left wing. He took the ball 25 metres inside the Swaffham half, made ground deep into the half, cut inside 30 metres out from goal, beating a couple of defenders in the process and placed a right footed shot to the keepers right into the far side of the goal. An excellent solo effort and well celebrated by the Fakenham players. The game see-sawed between the teams with both having chances and Swaffham slowly putting the Fakenham goal under seige as Fakenham defended deeper and deeper, giving no outlet upfield to give the defence a breather. The game could have been put out of Swaffham's reach after 71 minutes when the ball was moved right at the edge of the Swaffham area by Callum Brain and his deft pass found a totally unmarked Curtis about 6 metres off the far post but his finish went wide, wide, wide. With time running out Swaffham increased their pressure on the Fakenham goal and both Shane Akers and Dan Tuddenham were shown a Yellow Card. So 3-2 to Fakenham and it seemed that the final score would remain at that. Unfortunately not, as at 90+9 Ryan Pearson completed his hat-trick to grab the draw. (another corner not properly defended!!) There was time for the kick-off, 10 seconds of play and the final whistle blew. Where the extra time came from is an absolute mystery, in total approximately 14 minutes extra time played in a game with minimal injury stoppages that couldn't have totalled more than 5 or 6 minutes. Definitely a moral victory for Fakenham but the 3 points would have been a better reward against the 3rd placed team in the league. So dead-ball defending should now be top priority for the next few training sessions, the players know they need to do better and I know they will work on that. Last but not least - Fakenham's Man Of The Match Alby Matthews, patiently sitting on the bench with few opportunities but he certainly grabbed this one with a hard working and skillful performance that gave the Swaffham defence a really hard time, constantly beating opponents in the air and onnthe ground. #COYG
