Reserves win the Cyril Ballyn Cup

First silverware for 25 years, hard fought win

At the end of the game, it was a mightily relieved Reserves captain Johnathan Lane who lifted the Cyril Ballyn Cup over his head and the team could start their celebrations. The match was a dogfight from start to end, league form most certainly out the window as Brandon Town nearly, so nearly, caused a major upset. They started the brighter, only a minute into the game and their No 9 Josh Green showed his attacking intent with a shot from outside the penalty area that just went wide of the Fakenham goal. The Brandon start got a whole lot better after 14 minutes when Brandon's Callum Horn hit a long ball into the Fakenham area, it was only partially cleared and Green was on hand from a little way out to loop the ball over Bond, well off his line, and see it bounce into an empty Fakenham goal. The balance was restored 4 minutes later when Joe Harrison got the jump on a Brandon defender to head the ball onto Ben Darby who immediately dinked it through to an advancing Callum Brain and, from 10 metres out, he calmly slotted the ball past Connor Shephard in the Brandon goal. End to end stuff with Brandon going for the long ball game with Green and the 2 wingers Robbie Hunter and Stuart Scott , all 3 with lots of pace, continually chasing and putting the Fakenham defence under all sorts of pressure. Fakenham trying to play a more controlled passing game but more often than not the moves breaking down and the pressure coming back on the defence. As usual Fakenham's Callum Brain was coming in for close attention and it was no surprise when No 8 Liam Farnham was booked for a very untidy challenge which left Brain in a heap on the floor. After a spell of pressure on the Brandon goal, Fakenham took the lead when a Lane corner right into the middle of the goal found central defender Daniel Tuddenham's head and he made a clean contact to put the ball into the far side of the net. This signalled a much brighter spell from Fakenham who themselves put the Brandon defence in trouble with some crisp passing in the Brandon half but just couldn't make the space in the area for a finish. The Brandon defenders were putting in some excellent blocks, tackles, interceptions to frustrate the attackers. After 37 minutes there was an unforced substitution when Fakenham's Daniel Payne suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and was replaced with Liam Forge with Right Back Connor Daniels moving to the left. So 2-1 to the Reserves at half time, not a comfortable lead but a lead nontheless. If we thought the first half was tough, then the second half upped the ante, the Brandon half time team talk must have been inspirational as they came out with all guns blazing. Jonathan Lane was booked just 3 minutes into the second half for a foul on Liam Farnham which actually signalled a good 10 minutes for Fakenham as firstly a Ian Bulley cross found Brain in front of goal but his shot went just over the bar and then just a couple of minutes later Fakenham extended the lead to 3-1 as Tom East scored a great goal when he came in late from wide right to meet the crossed ball and put it past the keeper. Brandon responded almost immediately when only desperate Fakenham defending saw the ball cleared off the line for a corner. All game, Brandon corners had proved very dificult to defend against and this was Fakenham's undoing after 64 minutes when Brandon's captain No 5 Kyle Dyer had a free header on the penalty spot and his header evaded Bond for Brandon's second. From then on, Brandon launched wave upon wave of attacks with only the occasional Fakenham response. Bond was continually under pressure as high ball after high ball came into the penalty area but his handling and catching was very safe under challenges from Brandon players. Harrison had a shot rebound off the Brandon post but chances were few and far between as the Brandon long ball game dominated. Fakenham themselves made more and more use of the long ball but both Harrison and Darby were continually losing in the heading stakes, Dyer in particular winning just about everything in the air. With East replaced by Greeves after 63 minutes, it was the unlucky Greeves who conceded a very dubious penaly when he brought down a Brandon player wide on the edge of the area. Brandon's captain Dyer stepped up for the kick and Bond made a superb save as he dived to his right and palmed the low shot round the post for a corner. That was on 79 minutes and for the remaining 11 plus injury time, it was a rearguard action from Fakenham to maintain their goal advantage. When Fakenham did attack they played some lovely passing football but when it broke down, Brandon capitalised on the lack of numbers in the Fakenham defence to make things tough for those that remained. With the referee getting a bit card happy, there were bookings for Greeves on 84 minutes, Harrison on 87, Forge on 89 (that one well deserved) and Jarvis on 93. Brandon's Robbie Hunter got into the act as well after 94, booked for kicking the ball away (the same offence as by Jarvis). So the 1 goal lead was kept intact (just) and it was with some (well more than some!) relief that the final whistle blew and Fakenham Reserves could finally enjoy the double of promotion to Senior Football and the Cyril Ballyn Cup (glory!) as well. Commiserations to Brandon Town players who put everything into the game but it was just not to be for them. #COYG
