2nd draw in succession, 3-3 at Attleborough Town

By

Another 2 points thrown away!

With the attacking firepower on offer today in the shape of Connor Laskey, Luke Gray, Luke Priestley and Joe Harrison, you would have thought this game would have been an away banker. However, still a makeshift defence with Jonny Lane, Dan Payne, Connor Daniels and James Slater all missing and Ian Bulley unavailable, causing Ben Darby to be drafted into midfield yet again and U18 player Charlie Alcott making his first start at full back (despite being a centre back) with U18's Archie Savage (centre back) and Sam Owen (striker) on the bench. The game started off with both teams looking to attack and it was Fakenham who started the quicker when, after 12 minutes, a cross from Connor Laskey over the bunch of defenders in the middle of the penalty area, found Luke Gray at the far post and he had enough time to get his shot away and through the goalies legs. The lead was nearly doubled after 23 minutes when a cross field ball, left to right found Laskey in acres of space, he drove in onto goal but his shot was well blocked by the keepers legs. Fakenham paid for that miss when Attleborough Town equalised after 30 minutes when their left winger Jay Webb put a great low ball across the face of the goal, just out of reach of the diving Bond, and the No 9 Callum Kindred, had a simple tap-in. It took Fakenham only another 5 minutes to take the lead again through Luke Priestley. A Laskey shot came off the keeper's boots and rebounded to Priestley who made no mistake in putting the ball into the net. Attleborough's captain Steve Wright was sin-binned soon after the goal for continually questing the referee's decisions, a view obviously endorsed by the management who were spoken to 3 times during the match for comments with a last warning eventually given as patience was exhausted. Half time 2-1 to Fakenham and, to be blunt, it should have been a 4 or 5 goal lead at that stage, with both Laskey (definitely out of salts) and Priestley (would be nice if he actually passed the ball when someone else was in a much better scoring position) missing out. Start of the second half saw one U18 player replaced by another when Archie Savage came on for Charlie Alcott. Fakenham then opened up a 2 goal lead through a superb finish by Joe Harrison. A long clearance had the Attleborough No 3 Kyle Goodge misjudging his header in midfield which went backwards to give Harrison the opportunity to make ground on goal. Evennett in goal started to come out, changed his mind and was rooted to the spot as Harrison put in a delicate lob from 15 metres out over the keepers head and into the top of the goal. Attleborough reduced the lead when the referee pointed to the penalty spot when he (and he was the only one of the 23 people on the field) spotted a slight 'nudge' by Luke Gray on an attacker. Dan Jarvis was shown a Yellow Card for a scarcastic comment about the decision and Attleborough's Matt Carr had no problem in converting the spot kick. Don't you just love it when referee's can give a sin-bin for continually questioning decisions and then issue a card for less of the same. Luke Gray, carrying a knock was replaced by Sam Owen to give a bit of extra pace out wide. So game now on with Attleborough, as they had been doing for all the second half, putting tremendous pressure on the Fakenham goal in search of the equaliser and, but for some pretty awful finishing, could have had 3 or 4 goals themselves as the defence struggled to cope with attacks. A couple of possible chances came Fakenham's way but were wasted as Priestley continued to try to beat too many players rather than pass. A couple of times Owen was free with a sight of goal but was ignored. With a lengthy break for treatment to Ben Darby and Attleborough's Liam Kindred after a clash of heads, giving some 5 minutes of injury time it was in the 4th minute of that time when Attleborough scored the equaliser they had been threatening for the last 20 minutes. A scrappy goal by Ali Beales, where it should have been cleared comfortably but
with only another 30 seconds played, disappointing to have conceded. Hard to know who deserved the win, Fakenham for the 1st half, Attleborough for the 2nd, so perhaps a draw the right result. Captain Ben Darby given my vote as Player of the Match with an all over the pitch performance with playmaking to get attacks started and then covering and some ferocious tackling leaving a few bruises on opposition players. If only a few more could play with that intensity. A 2 week break now with Tom East's wedding next weekend and then a trip to leaders Mundford for a crunch game , one we definitely want to win, followed by a home match against North Walsham Town. #COYG
