Saturday 17th February 2018 - Reserves win at home against Thetford Rovers 8-0
Reserves win again, fourth clean sheet in a row
Fakenham Town Reserves hosted mid table Thetford Rovers on a DRY and SUNNY afternoon and finished comfortable winners by 8-0, with hat tricks for Joe Harrison and Jonny Lane and a brace for Daniel Jarvis, to complete a league double following the 4-1 win at Euston Park earlier in the season. Thetford, missing a number of their regular players, always struggled against the pace and movement of the Fakenham team and, after an even first 10 minutes, conceded their first goal when Joe Harrison converted a hard and low Ian Bulley cross at the near post. The second goal came after 19 minutes when a Jonny Lane corner on the left found an unmarked Daniel Jarvis on the near post with the easiest of headers. The third goal came courtesy of Jonny Lane who, after an air shot in front of goal from a Callum Brain cross, reacted first to his own mishit and smashed it past a static keeper. Fakenham's keeper Richard Bond had his first real piece of action after 32 minutes when he tipped over a shot from the Thetford No 7 Steven Davies to concede a corner. This was cleared by the defence and immediately a quick break by Bulley on the left and a cross into the penalty area saw first Harrison and then Brain have shots blocked by the Thetford keeper before the ball was cleared. The Harrison - Brain combination almost increased the lead when a headed back flip by Harrison left Brain clear on goal but a great block by a defender cleared the danger. Just to show they were still a danger, the Thetford No 9 Rocky Holt broke past the last Fakenham defender but was forced wide by an outcoming Bond and Daniel Tuddenham got back to slide in at the post to clear off the line. A great clearance with Thetford appealing for a penalty as it appeared the ball struck Tuddenhams arm. Fakenhams fouth goal came in the 38th minute when Brain's quick feet left the Thetford defender beaten all ends up on the right hand goal line and his cross was seized upon by Daniel Jarvis for his second of the afternoon. So 4-0 half time mostly Fakenham but Thetford always looking dangerous when they broke.
The second half was completely one sided as Fakenham scored at regular intervals, Harrison after 55 minutes, Lane with 2 goals in the 87th and 88th minutes to complete his hat-trick and finally Harrison with his third, a one-on-one with the keeper after a through ball by Jarvis left him clear, a couple of minutes from the end. Thetford found themselves down a player down with No 6 Woods receiving 2 Yellows in very quick succession to depart, followed almost immediately when another Thetford player was sin-binned to reduce the team to 9. The game became very one sided at this stage with constant Fakenham pressure but an inability to convert the numerous chances created slightly spoiled the overall performance, better composure will be needed for next weeks table topper against Easton. All 3 substitutes got some valuable game time, with Brain tactically withdrawn as he was a constant target for some robust challengers throughout the game though he replaced the injured Craig Rutland for the last 10 minutes.
