Fakenham Reserves v Gayton United 17 April 2018

Much needed win, superb football at the Reserves last home game

We wondered how the team would react to Saturday's heartbreaking 4-3 defeat at East Harling on Saturday, and the reaction was to play some of their best football of the season to beat a competitive and skillful Gayton United team by 4-0. Every player played their part to perfection, absolutely no-one had an off game and there was some delightful football played. Despite injury doubts from Saturday's match about Daniel Tuddenham and Connor Daniels, both were passed fit and started. The other injury, that to Daniel Payne, couldn't be cleared up and he will miss a few games at least. U18 players Matthew Wheeler and Alex Robinson came in to sit on the bench alongside Carlos Greeves.
Perhaps the team were bouyed up by the presentation before the match by the Anglian Combination's Chairman Graham Jubb of the Junior Team of the Month for January Award. A good way to start the match. Both teams started brightly with good one-touch football testing the resolve of the defences, with Fakenham creating the first real chance when a long Ian Bulley corner found Ben Darby at the far post but his powerful shot was cleared upfield. With Joe Harrison and Darby continually putting the Gayton defenders under pressure, a loose clearance found Callum Brain who made ground and hit a powerful shot from 25 metres out which beat the keeper to his right. Not more than a couple of minutes later, Brain almost had his second when his free kick on the edge of the area hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety. Gayton had a couple of opportunities soon after, the best coming from a free kick into the Fakenham area that was headed on and Darren Wood's shot was just inches past the upright. On 26 minutes, a Bond kick from hand went deep into the Gayton half, the defender mistimed his header which fell to Brain but his shot from 30 metres out went well over the bar. Obviously in the shooting mood, Brain nearly converted a free kick just outside the area but it just skimmed the bar. By this stage, Fakenham were playing some really neat football and dominating all over the field so it was no surprise when their second came from an Ian Bulley special. Ben Darby made ground down the right, turning his defender every which way before his long pass found Bulley on the left. He got swiftly into the area before unleashing a cracker of a shot from 18 metres which whistled past the keeper and into the net. 40 minutes gone, 2 goals to the good and playing some gorgeous football. Only 3 minutes into the second half saw the lead increased when Joe Harrison converted a chance in front of goal. The rest of the half belonged totally to the Reserves with Gayton continually chasing the game but their attacks fizzled out with some great defending and their defence under continual pressure and giving the ball away most of the time.
With the game virtually secure U18 players Matty Wheeler and Alex Robinson came on after 72 minutes in place of Harrison and Bulley and showed why they are so highly rated with some delightful touches and combining well with Brain and Darby to put even more pressure on the Gayton defence. Brain finally got his second after 78 minutes when he combined with Darby and Wheeler to leave the defence in tatters and the keeper well beaten. 4-0 final score and the result has certainly settled some nerves, leaving promotion definitely beckoning. Perhaps only 4 more points from our remaining 4 games may be sufficient depending on other results.
