Reserves beat Mattishall Reserves to (almost!) end the season

Scorcheroo in Mattishall, a good win, almost there

If we had played this match in Rio, it would have been on the beach with the occasional break to have a dip in the sea. As it was in Mattishall, the best we could manage was a water break midway through each half and very welcome it was too. The hottest day by far of the season saw an enjoyable game between the two teams, competitive but well disciplined by both sides, no bookings (well refereed Mr Sadd) and some good football played. Up to the first drinks break, both teams had chances, Ben Darby the majority of them with not much luck in his attempted finishes and Xavier Huckle for Mattishall nearly converting a well placed corner but his header was wide. The best individual effort of the complete game by far was from full back Connor Daniels who, starting from deep in his own half, left half the Mattishall side beaten for both pace and skill, before his cross cum shot raced across the goal before being cleared for a corner. And it was from a corner that the Reserves took the lead when an Ian Bulley inswinger found Daniel Jarvis unmarked in the middle of the penalty area and his firm header beat keeper James Milne. Half time was a relief for the players with both teams seeking the shade of the trees and taking on copious amounts of fluids. Must have worked for Fakenham as the lead was doubled after 47 minutes when Alex Robinson, played in by Brain and Ben Darby, beat the keeper from 7 metres out on the edge of the area with a well placed shot to the keepers left. The lead almost increased when a Tuddenham header was well saved by the Mattishall keeper who had a really excellent game that kept Mattishall in with a chance. Mattishall reduced the lead when Alex Curran scored after the ball came off the crossbar, bounced out into play and his chip cum shot crossed the line with Bond only able to get to the ball after it had already crossed the line. The final 20 minutes was the Fakenham passing game versus the Mattishall long ball game with the Fakenham defence coping well with the balls delivered to Huckle and McFarlane and the Mattishall defence not coping at all well with the passing game but Milne continued to defy the attackers with more fine saves and Darby forgetting where the net was with a (considerable!) number of missed chances. He wasn't the only one but only fair to say he had the most!!. Final score 2-1 to Fakenham Town Reserves. Just one more to go now and then time to think about next season (after a well deserved break for the team). #COYG
