Still undefeated in 2019, signs off the last home game of the season with a good win

Missing 5 regulars through holiday or suspension, Fakenham eventually ran out very comfortable winners over Leiston Reserves in their last home game of the season. Leiston perhaps started the brighter as the Fakenham defence sorted themselves out positionwise but it didn't take long for the opening Fakenham goal to come along when, after 12 minutes, Tom Blake had a good effort blocked, the ball came back to Alby Matthews whose shot from 8 metres out richoched off a defender as he came to close down and the ball looped at speed over the keeper. The Fakenham second came courtesy of Tom Blake who received a ball wide on the right, cut in and comfortably beat the keeper from 5 metres out. So 2 up after 20 minutes became 3 when Blake was brought down in the area, a perhaps harsh decision as he seemed to be going down anyway, and captain for the day Shane Akers nominated himself (perhaps he was on penalties or perhaps not!) to take the spot kick and his firm shot comfortably beat the keeper. Leiston nearly pulled one back when a shot from 15 metres out hit the underside of the cross bar, went straight down but was adjudged not to have crossed the line. 3-0 up at half time and Fakenham were cruising, dealing very easily with the sporadic Leiston attacks with Josh Youngs and Alex Wapole dealing very calmly with whatever was thrown their way. The second half saw Leiston get back more into the game, a chance came their way after 62 minutes and the No 11, Jourdan Kiwomya, clinically put the ball past Coombe. It took not much more than 60 seconds before Fakenham scored their fourth (and best) when a free kick was awarded some 30 metres outside the area and Connor Charlesworth's bullet effort got over the wall and left the keeper stranded as the ball hit the right hand stanchion at the back of the net. With a comfortable 4-1 lead, Luke Gray and Gus Matthew came on in place of Ricky Claxton and Alby Matthews to freshen things up a bit and keep the pressure on a Leiston defence that was looking a bit short of pace. A distance effort hit the Leiston crossbar and Blake continued to torment the defence with his ability to beat the player and accelerate away. With 77 minutes gone 16 year old Matthew Grand made his 1st Team debut in place of Frazer Field, dare one say a bit ironic as only 48 hours previously he had been a member of the Dereham Town U18 team that beat Fakenham Town U18's over at Aldiss park. With 10 minutes to go, Blake scored his second and Fakenham's fifth, a gimme when Gus Matthews broke past the last defender, approached the keeper and very generously passed to Blake for a simple tap-in. With a couple of minutes left, Leiston scored their second when Coombe was forced to come quickly out to block a ball but lost out in the tackle to No 10 Carrigan who had a open goal to aim for. Final score 5-2, and only the second time this season they had managed 5 in a match. Fouth place in the league maintained and 3 league matches to go, Haverhill Borough next week, 5th place March Town on 22nd April followed the week after with a trip to bottom place Wisbech St Mary to complete the league season. Then the League Challenge Cup Final at Diss Town on Easter Monday 6th May against Premier Division Long Melford. Could be a really good way to end 2018-2019. UTG
